Family Day 2010

Family Day 2010, with record-breaking attendance at more than 500 participants, was one of the most successful family events ever at UNC Charlotte. Hosted by the Office of Parent and Family Services, the event ended with both students and parents happy about their time spent together on campus.

Family Day took place in conjunction with Homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 20 and had the added benefit of beautiful, 60-degree sunny weather — not typical in mid-February. Parents enjoyed watching the Homecoming parade, walking around campus, and partaking in tailgating festivities in their Niner Nation Family t-shirts and jeans, ever the more thankful for the spring-like weather.

The day started off with registration and a delicious breakfast with Chancellor Dubois, his wife, Lisa Lewis-Dubois, and other campus leaders. UNC Charlotte Student Body President Joey Lemons led the prize giveaway, where several students walked away with new printers, gift certificates to an on-campus coffee shop, a semester of free parking, and a semester of free tuition.

Perhaps the highlight of the breakfast was when stunned UNC Charlotte student Philip Grassmann won the semester of free tuition and his father, Bob Grassmann, jumped up with excitement and quickly walked to the stage to pick up the prize for his son. The audience laughed and cheered, clearly empathizing with the emotions that the dad and his son were experiencing.
“We, the Grassmann family, feel that we are very fortunate and lucky to have won this endowment from the Family Day event,” said Bob Grassmann. “The chancellor and his cabinet graciously expressed the traditions, history and the future of UNC Charlotte during the Chancellor’s breakfast. Our son was in a state of shock at the announcement of the winning ticket, while my joyous response was heard throughout the banquet room. The Grassmann family thanks UNC Charlotte and the Family Day Committee.”

The large crowd enjoyed the Homecoming parade and had perfect seats for viewing the festivity right outside the Student Union.

Families then made their way to the recreation fields, where Family Day participants had their own special tailgate lunch waiting for them. After a full meal and a few hours in the sun socializing, UNC Charlotte men’s 49ers basketball team kicked off their game against the Xavier Musketeers.
