Transfer Summer SOAR 2013

Student Program Information

On behalf of the University community, we would like to congratulate you on your admission to UNC Charlotte! We are sure you are excited about beginning your career as a 49er. In order to make your time here the most rewarding, you should take advantage of the SOAR Program. This program assists you with your transition to UNC Charlotte and allows you to meet with your academic advisor and register for your fall semester classes. You will also learn important information about the university and all of the services in place to promote your success.  We thank you for your interest in attending SOAR. Feel free to review more information about the SOAR program in our invitation brochure.

Students enrolling for Summer Session I at UNC Charlotte must contact their academic department for advising and registration information. Students enrolling for Summer Session II should attend SOAR prior to beginning summer classes at UNC Charlotte.

Please note that in order to assist with the advising process, it is highly recommended that you bring a copy of your college transcripts. Your transcript evaluation report is available on the Admissions Office website: admissions.uncc.edu. If you do not have access to a computer with internet capabilities contact the SOAR Office at (704)-687-2375.

In order to register for fall semester classes, it is mandatory that all students attend all programs within a SOAR session. Failure to attend and participate may result in a student’s dismissal from the program.

SOAR Outdoor

SOAR Outdoor is an optional outdoor, adventure-based experience offered in conjunction with Venture, UNC-Charlotte's professionally managed outdoor program. Following SOAR, join a small group of other incoming students and upperclassmen leaders for five days of backpacking and ropes course experiences in the Pisgah National Forest located in the western North Carolina mountains. SOAR Outdoor dates are Friday, June 21 through Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

While participation will be most convenient for students attending Transfer SOAR 2, you are able to sign up for SOAR Outdoor as long as your SOAR session happens before SOAR Outdoor (i.e. Transfers attending sessions 1-2 are eligible). Specific Academic Information

Placement Testing at SOAR

To facilitate the academic advising process and to ensure you are placed at the appropriate level in certain courses, placement examinations are given at all Summer Transfer SOAR sessions except for the Monday July 1st session.  Students attending the July 1st session who need to take Math or Foreign Language Placement Exams should arrange to take those exams outside of the SOAR program.  If you need testing accommodations because of a documented disability, call Disability Services at (704) 687-4355 before you attend SOAR.

Mathematics Proficiency Examination

All Transfer students who have not completed the equivalent of College Algebra (Math 1100), Pre-Calculus (Math 1103) or Calculus (Math 1120 or 1241) are required to complete the math placement exam at SOAR. Students whose major falls under the College of Business and those majoring in Biology and Engineering Technology are also required to take the exam, regardless of previous coursework. Doing so helps determine the appropriate level of math courses for which a student may register.

The exam covers the topics in a standard high school Algebra II course. The math proficiency exam does not contain any material on trigonometry. Students are not allowed to use calculators for the exam. Test scores are given to students during the SOAR program and are used for academic advising and course registration.  It is highly recommended that you take the practice math proficiency exam found online at http://math.uncc.edu/undergraduate-programs/math-placement-test-faqs.  You can learn more information about the math proficiency exam by contacting the Mathematics Department at (704) 687-2580.

Foreign Language Proficiency Examination

Students whose majors lie within the Colleges of Arts and Architecture and Liberal Arts and Sciences in addition to those majoring in Nursing, Social Work and International Business must demonstrate a competency in either foreign language or American Sign Language. You can access information regarding taking the placement exam at: https://languages.uncc.edu/undergraduate-programs/requirements-and-policies/language-placement-test.  Additional questions about foreign language requirements and exemptions for CLEP, AP, and prior course work is available at the website above or may be directed to the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies at (704) 687-8754. The foreign language exam costs $10, and payment can only be received with a credit card through their office.
